Meeting on 1/10/11

Hello everyone,

HELP TMC had our meeting today, on the 1st of October. Today's meeting was themed 'money,' and was very appropriate with the financial demands of this day and age.

The meeting started off with a question posed by ASAA, Kevin Ho. The question was," Would you rather have plenty of money, and be relatively happy, or be very happy, and have a relatively high amount of money?" After hearing a range of answers, we moved on to the table topics session for the day.

Table topics master, Hadi, came up with 5 interesting and thought-evoking titles for the table topics speakers. After hearing from five speakers, we moved on to the table topics evaluation session. Jason Moi, an experienced and seasoned toastmaster, provided the table topic evaluation, accurately pointing out all the speakers' flaws, giving advise, and praising the good parts.

After the evaluation session was complete, we moved on to the assignment speakers. First up, we had Vincent Liew, who was preparing for his District Level Competition, on the 15th of this month. After delivering his speech entitled Love and Imperfections, we then heard from Dennis Wee, who was also preparing for a competition, later this month.

After taking a short break, we had more assignment speeches, from Toastmasters Roshini(cc#1), Tze Yi(cc#6) and Kevin(cc#8). After the speeches were complete, we moved on to our evaluation session, with G.E. Seetho taking the stage, before inviting his team of evaluators to deliver their reports.

After all the evaluations wee over, president Zoe took over. She started by giving out the certificates to the best table topics speaker(Rajveer Singh), best assignment speaker(Roshini), and the best evaluator(Rajveer Singh). She then ended with the announcement of the District Levels Humour Speech competition, which will be held in HELP, on the 8th of October!

HELP Humour Speech and Evaluation Contest

Hello everyone!

On the 13th of August, Saturday, HELP TMC had our annual Humour Speech an Evaluation contest. It was held in our very own DSA room in Wisma HELP. A special thank you to Victor Ong, Area Governer, and chief judge, for taking the time and making the effort for being there for our competition, especially since it was held on a Saturday morning.

The competition started on time, at 10.00 a.m. It sta

rted with the humour speech contest. The speeches were brilliant, and ranged from the effects of facebook, to parents' expectation of their children, from being a transsexual to the evolution of technology, and from one's nightmare birthday experience to the art of photography. There were also many other topics that were spoken about on the day, and really tickled the audience. After hearing the speeches from all eight speakers, we took a 20 minute breather.

After the break, the evaluation contest began. Test speaker Micheal, took the stage with his speech regarding choosing the right career path. A special thank you to Micheal for taking the responsibility of being our test speaker for our in-house competition. After his speech, and hearing the feed back from all 8 evaluators, we had some announcements. The certificates were then presented to all the role players, including the time keepers, the ballot counters, the SAAs, and not to forget the judges.

After the certificates were given out, it was time to announce the results! The results were then announced by the respective contest chairs, Oh Jian Yi for the Humour Speech, and Ivan Yong for the Eavluation contests. The winners are as follows:

Good luck to them, who will fly our college flag high, when they represent us in the G3 and G4 contest next month. A special thank you to all the judges, contestants, role players, and everyone else who was there to support this event. Our Forth Meeting-6th of august 2011

Hey all!

We had our 1st meeting of August today, on the 6th of August. We were fortunate to have Siok Looi, an experienced Toastmaster as our General Evaluator for the meeting. We also had a full house today with guests from TTDI TMC, Telekom TMC and Monash TMC.

The theme of this meeting was Family. Everything from the introductions to the table topics session centered around this relatable topic. Everyone had plenty to talk about. Topics like "My father, my idol" and "If one day you woke up with a different family.." were among the things that were discussed. We had 5 table topic speakers, and then continued on with the evaluation session.

After the evaluation session, we moved on to the highlight of the meeting, that is the Humorous Speech Workshop by none other than TTDI TMC's president Lee Xi Wen. It was a very informative workshop as we learnt how to construct jokes through various methods like triads and so on. Drawing on his vast experience in giving humorous speeches, Lee Xi Wen imparted valuable knowledge on the subject, which will prove especially useful to the contestents of next week's Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest.

After the workshop, which lasted about 30 minutes, we had the assignment speakers. This week we had 3 speakers who gave varied but solid performances in their respective speeches.

After the assignment speeches, we had the evaluation session for the assignment speakers. Detailed reports were given on each speaker's performance. Next, the language evaluator, time keeper and Ah-Counter role players gave their reports for the meeting, followed by our GE. Last but not least, we had all the guests give their feedback on their experience in today's meeting.

Finally, President Zoe Lo, took the stage with her closing address. She began by awarding certificates to the best table topic speaker (Zoe Lo), best assignment speaker( Kevin Ho) and best evaluator (Siok Looi). She then brought the eventful meeting to an end with a few last words.

Our third Meeting on 30th of July 2011

Hello everyone!!!

As usual, we had our weekly meeting yesterday, on the 30th of July. We were lucky to have DTM Lourdes Chandramohan, IPP of Bangsar Toastmasters Club as our General Evaluator for the meeting. We were also blessed that district governer, Victor Ong , could join us. We were also joined by guests from Monash TMC, Telekom TMC, and several others.
The meeting started with a round of tabletopic speeches. Seeing that the theme for the meeting was 'time' and it's importance, ttm Kevin appropriately chose topics like 'Wasting time' and 'saving time' We had six table topic speakers, and then moved on to the evaluation session. After all, evaluation is the breakfast of champions, as they say.
After the evaluation session, we moved on to the assignment speakers. We had five speakers who had been scheduled to deliver speeches, and all five did an outstanding job. GE Lourdes was so impressed that he said he would like to re-visit our club in the near future to see our progress and help us to develop and improve further our club.

After the assignment speeches, we had our second evaluation session. As always, this evaluation session was done by seperate evaluators for each speaker. After the evaluations, the language evaluator, time keeper and Ah-counter role-players gave their reports for the meeting., followed by our GE. Finally, district governer Victor Ong took over the stage and thankd us for inviting him. He was also very impressed by our progress since he last visited us, and promised to help us grow and improve along the way.

Finally, President Zoe Lo, took over for her closing address. She started by giving out the certificates for the best table topics speaker(Siew Peng), best assignment speaker(Rajveer), and also the best evaluator(Siew Peng again!!!). She then called the meeting to a close by once again stressing the importance of making the most of our time, and reminding us that,"You control time, time does not control you."
After the meeting, we had a special session where we cut a Secret Recipe cake to celebrate the birthdays of all of our members who had been born in the month of July. From now onwards, this will be a normal practice to cut a cake at the final meeting of every month!!

*Announcement: On our next meeting, 6/8/11, we will be having a special humour speech briefing by Lee Xi Wen, the runner up in the district humour session. Xi Wen will be briefing us on how to add humour in our speeches, and this will be very helpful for those who intend to take part in the humour speech competitions over the course of August.. DO COME!!!!

AS you all know, we have had a change of exco members for the second half of the year 2011. The new generation has taken over. The following are the new and incomming exco members for the July-December term of the year 2011:

This coming friday, 22rd July 2011, we will be having our installation dinner, to officially install the incoming exco members, and honour our outgoing exco members. The dinner will take place in our very own campus, the HELP University Dept. of student affairs room and is expected to start at 7.30p.m . The menu will be a western dinner, inclusive of an appertizer, main courses and desserts. A fee of RM30 will be charged, to cater for the food. Trust me when I say that the food is mouth watering, and will make you crave for more. I sincerely hope that you will be able to join us in our celebrations, as many area governors and division G governor-Rohijas will be there, making it a golden oppertunity for you to network. In doing so, we will also be able to get to know one another better, and widen our toastmasters family. Last but not least, we promise you a night of great fun!

TLI + Installation Dinner (19/02/2011)

Aloha Toasties,

This week we started our trip to TLI2 with a mini meeting at Mc Donald's/ Subway at PBD.

We headed to Wisma IJM about noon and arrived there on time, whew!!!( knowing our bad timing)

As the new board, we received diversified advice from members of other clubs and areas in the division.

SURPRISE: In the middle of the event, the TOM announced that someone's car had a tree branch on it and it was Vincent's car!!!! Luckily the branch did not crush his car but still cause an obvious dent on his car roof top. Haiz, so sorry Vincent!!!!

Later we headed to our installation dinner with the area secretary as our installer.

Everyone gave positive response to the dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Besides witnessing the installation of the new exco. We also witnessed members AMOS and ROSE(you know who you are) "discussing" about IPhone apps, they were so into it that a glass broke!!!

2 Week Countdown to Club Contest (12/02/2011)

Hello toasties.

Today's toastmasters meeting was full of surprises, one of them was Mr. Daniel Teh visiting our club. He was coaching one of the members from the 6 months old Monash Toastmasters Club.

Have you heard the saying,

If we could sell our experiences for what they cost us, we'd all be millionaires.

Well in today's meeting, we witnessed it!!!!!

Congrats to Mun Yee for winning our best table topics of the day. Good luck at the contests!!!!!

The sound advice given by Daniel popped the beautiful bubble that has been surrounding the club members and made us realize that what we are doing is far from enough.

Yes, I have just confirmed with Qin Mei that she is gonna be leaving for Australia on 12th of Feb

We had a farewell dinner with her on the 10th of Feb at Mcdonald's Uptown. We talked, joked and reminisced about our time in toastmasters and how different were our paths leading us.

I remember Qin Mei as the senior member in HELP Toastmasters when I first joined last year. She is a good friend, great mentor and amazing presenter. I hope she does well in whatever she wants to in the future and keep in touch with us old friends.

The A-levels people who have been gone for the past month due to exams are back. Each of them carrying a new spirit in rejoining the club's activities making the energy level higher then it has ever been.

Everyone had fun mingling and rekindling old friendships. The SAA had to call the meeting to order thrice before everyone settled down.

AND we have a big improvement in our timing as we started the meeting on time!

The new EXCO are very determined to get all the 10 DCP's hence they held an exco meeting right after the club meeting to discuss strategies.

Ever heard of this saying? It is totally true. That's why HELP University College Toastmasters organized the Joint Meeting.

We invited toastmasters from other club, mostly University's Toastmasters Club but due to exams, some cannot make.

However, Taylors, Sunway, HICT, UM, SpeeCom and D'Utama toastmasters were there and we have the fun and camaraderie atmosphere.

2nd Intercollege Joint Meeting 2010

As information poster pasted here, we are going to have our second intercollege joint meeting! It has been a year since we had our first intercollege joint meeting with HELP TMC, Nilai TMC, HICT TMC, Unirazak TMC, and UM TMC!

This time around, we are happy to have HELP, Taylors, Unirazak, Sunway, UM and Stanford who will gather tomorrow at our DSA Meeting and Activity Room at HELP Main Campus, Pusat Bandar Damansara from 1.30pm onwards.

The theme set for this meeting is 'Uniquely Me'; and as young leaders let us set our own uniqueness and individuality to take charge of tomorrow. Therefore, you are allowed to wear something that you never wear before to Toastmasters (nope, bikinis and trunks outside are not allowed)!

The Meeting on 2/10/2010

HELLO EVERYBODY.

The Help University College Toastmasters Club was having our weekly meeting on the 2/10/2010.

and we get to see advance impromptu speech about why change is necessary in the world.

Why smell is important in choosing a partner. A smelly partner could be your sexy partner ;)

and of course, the Romeo and Juliet drama presentation that is shortened and crunch in twelve minutes.

The meeting started with Faiq, our SAA with the introductory session

Then the members introduced themselves and share with everybody about their current mood.

After the Table Topic Session, we moved on to Huang Qinmei's advance speech where she is required to speak on her feet. Her impromptu speech for 5-7 minutes (basically, it's table topics session for 5-7 minutes lar)

Then Eugene take on the stage with his speech about "Smell" the odour. Where smell is important for choosing your partner (this boy is a future doctor, He definitely know what he is talking about) but sorry Eugene, something got wrong with my camera and I didn't manage to take your pictures : (

Then we have our own in house, Jason "Drama King" Moi who presented his advance speech where he solely presented and recite the love story of Romeo and Juliet.

and the whole room, was in awe. Jason played the Romeo, Juliet, the father, the mother or basically everyone in that play. Don't believe me? Look at the audiences face.

TLI Training in UPM Serdang.

All the new Toastmasters International exco members are required to attend TLI training provided by their own District officers and we, the new exco members from HELP University College Toastmasters club are not excluded.

After our Saturday meeting, Jason (VPE), Zoe (VPM), Ivan (Secretary) and me (VPPR) car-pooled to Serdang. The other 3 exco members did not join us due to unforeseen circumstances. Jaime, our beloved president have family matters to take care. Luke, our treasurer is in Cambodia for his charity work and Sue Ann, our SAA is attending math competition.

Off we went! But the journey to Serdang, is like a journey to the far away land and none of us are familiar with that area. As we expected we got lost, stop by petrol station and ask for direction and *phiew* we are in UPM.

The highlight of the day is of course, the four of us getting lost on our day back.

However, the TLI training is awesome and I am more than motivated to perform my role and service the members of the HELP Toastmasters club.

The NEW Chapter!

It's JULY!!! Guess what, it is the beginning to a new term of HELP UC Toastmasters club. Yes, I as the VPPR will update this blog as often as possible.

However, it won't be the typical meeting minutes blog post, I will also slit in some humour, cartoons, random facts and everything interesting into this blog. Follow this blog more often alright!

The light update here of course, when you have a new exco members, you will have......INSTALLATION DINNER!

The most suited up man of the night, Hadzrin Shah from UEM Academy as our installation chairman.

The installation dinner was held at The Terrace, Royale Bintang Hotel. Yes, the food is AWESOME.

Our immediate past president saw something and she was shocked! (I am pretty sure she saw the amount of food at the buffet area)

The night goes on with dinner, talks, and jokes (mostly from the Vincent, his jokes are pretty lame though. Pssshh, don't tell him)

It's a Saturday and it's HELP Toastmasters Club Meeting!

Amazing atmosphere on a Saturday, despite the fact that the meeting is on Saturday morning, when most people will still be sleeping.

However, the whole bunch of HELP toasties attended the morning meeting with full energy.

Young Toastmasters Outing Trip

7th March 2010, Sunday.

On this fateful day, 12 toastmasters rendezvoused at KL Sentral McD at 0800. Each individual hail from different backgrounds. But one destination and purpose brought all of them together, they were set to conquer the legendary CRAB ISLAND. RAWRR~~

Cassy took the prize money and subsidized our meal. Our 7-course meal was only RM 200!! WOW! For 12 pax?! Seriously! Now that's what I call a bargain.

19th September 2009 Meeting

The meeting started with SAA Michelle breaking the ice by getting all the members to introduce themselves. She also requested all the members to reveal their Hari Raya holiday plans as our meeting was just a day before the Hari Raya celebration.

Meeting moved with Qinmei giving her presidential address. She gave a message to fellow members to make full use of their toastmasters membership for personal growth and advancement.

Next up was table topic session. Denise, the Table topic master gave a common speech title to all speakers which goes: “Action speaks louder than words. Do you agree or disagree?”. I volunteered myself to be the first speaker and was able to pull through the session. Cassandra took a stand of disagreeing with the statement. Kok Weng, the 3^rd speaker agreed to the statement only to a certain extent and gave examples with regards to politics. Lorna Fisher, a guest from KL Advanced Toastmasters Club playing the role of the language evaluator gave us an interesting perspective where action can be more appropriate in certain circumstances than words, vice versa. Last but not least, Qinmei affirm the statement and gave examples where she personally experience the power of action over words.

Table topic evaluator Boon Keong gave us a detailed evaluation by summarizing our good points and pointing our weakness coupled with ways of improvement.

Next on the agenda were assignment speeches. Firstly, Qinmei gave us a speech on how to sell a product effectively. She even performed a demonstration with TOM Jee Aik to give a picture of how to sell effectively using her key points in the selling process, which were establishing rapport, identifying needs, solving problem and obtaining commitment.

Ernest was the second speaker. He gave us a short presentation on the importance of the Toastmaster of the morning’s role and detailed points on serving as a TOM. In his speech, the TOM should introduce the speaker in which the following questions are answered: 1. Why this speaker? 2. Why this audience? 3. Why at this time? 4. Why this subject?

Last on the list was Joyce Hue, our club’s past president. She gave a speech on hypnotherapy, a form of therapy which is relatively new in Malaysia. Its purpose was to unleash the power of the mind to overcome fears and problems. She even conducted a simple session on the audience which gave us a feel on hypnotherapy.

Evaluation session was conducted by the general evaluator Sze Ling from D’Utama Toastmasters Club. Janice from TTDI Toastmasters Club evaluated Qinmei. The language evaluator Lorna Fisher gave her report and stressed on the importance of proper pronunciation of words. Roon Hui gave his Ah counter report for the 1^st time. Timekeeper Jamie presented her report as well. General evaluator gave her comments on the meeting. She enjoyed herself very much in this meeting and gave a few pointers for improvement such as starting the meeting on time and giving a warm applause after every speech. Respect and recognition are 2 values which toastmaster embodies and as members we should also put them into practice.

Lastly, Qinmei gave a closing address by expressing her gratitude to all the guests and members for making the meeting a success. The best table topic speaker was awarded to Lorna Fisher.

5th September Meeting and Farewell Lunch to John Lee, Jason Lim and Gajendran

It's a pleasant thing to have your camera. That's number 1 case. Contrary to the number 1, it's not soo pleasant thing if your camera's battery was dead half way for the second half-day. okay, forget about my rambling introduction; let's skip to the main menu of today. Today; besides having our first September meeting; unfortunately it is the final meeting for our three musketeers of our club: John Lee, Gajendran and Jason Lim as they are going to UK for their law studies.

Cassandra as the SAA-of the meeting gave us an introductory question by asking the latest movie we've watched or we want to watch. After that, Qinmei took over by giving her presidential address and asked us to 'Be Sad' as she announced about John, Gajendran and Jason Lim's departures. Nevertheless, the moody atmosphere was brighten by TOM Jee Aik who gave us the brief Toastmasters history and proceed with the agenda of the meeting.

After that, Ernest Wong gave us an insight on 'Creating the Best Climate for Your Club' through his workshop. As he mentioned, he stressed on the importance of creating the good atmosphere and setting in order to invite and retain people in and out of the club.

After that, we went into the Table Topic session headed by Jaime as the TTM. She divided the choices of questions into two paths: the Chance or the Destiny/Fate. Jason Lim was the first who chose the Destiny: The most successful people are those who are good at Plan B.

Next, we have Gajendran for the tough destiny choice on 'A big shot is little shotsd that kept shooting'.

De Ren was pretty unfortunate to choose the Destiny path on the longest quote given; 'The World is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil; but because of those who look on and do nothing'. And this quote was by Albert Einstein.

Finally, our newly joined member Daniel also gave his second Tabletopic speech who was the first and final person who chose the Chance path and his question is 'If I wasn't me, I'd be...?"

We had a quick break of 10 minutes before we had our first and only one assignment speech by John Lee. It was his fifth ACM speech where he gave us the new term; new meaning; and the new information about 'Schadenfreuder' [Sha.den.fr0y.the] (it's german, by the way). The meaning? The joy/pleasure for seeing sufferings. He stressed that it is a 'social comparison' phenomenon; where people in nature love comparing; thus, they fell pleasurable when others do badly than them.

Next, John also conducted a workshop on 'Finding New Members for Your Club'. He gave many tips on how to attract new members and making sure the members' interests are attained in order mantain the flow of the members in and out of the club.

Next session was evaluation session where GE Dr.Sharon Tan CTM, ALB gave us the detailed general evaluation about our meeting and the role-playing for the benefit of the guests and new members. She also encouraged us about involving in Toastmasters for the future.

Next, Gajendran took over and evaluated John's speech.

As for the best table topic speaker, Jason Lim pulled off with his 2-min speech on reasons why plan A will fail and why plan B will be used instead in order to be successful.

After two years! Gajendran finally gained his CC and CL title before he flew to Wales.

And John managed to get his ACS title as he completed his ACM manual!

After that, we headed to the farewell lunch at Marco's Pizzas.

Ernest Wong, Jason Moi, Qinmei and Jess Foong from UNITAR TMC gave their farewell mini speech to three of future lawyers respectively.

And of course the three future lawyers had to gave speech. And so John spoke about Gajendran, while Gajendran to Jason Lim and Jason Lim to John Lee. We had our group photo before we left=) All those moments captured!

29th August Speech Marathon Meeting

As the main blogger of this club, I should be equipped with cameras all the time. *tsk* *tsk* *tsk* And i apologize for not being able to fulfill the above statement. Nevertheless, as the saying goes; you just take anything you got and make something out of it. Yes, 2..0 megapixel camera phone's effect on the following pictures.

Anyway, keep things short, another bad news ahead in this post. Due to the unbelievable speeches and amazing scenes, I forgot to snap those scenes. My bad. But seriously, for those who missed the previous meetings, you should make up for the upcoming meetings even more:

Okay, back to our 29th August 2009 meeting.

We started off 5 minutes late; and SAA Jaime began the meeting by conducting the introduction section by members and guests and asking the question; "Name one thing about Malaysia that doesn't have to change". After that TOM Jee Aik gave his own version of brief Toastmasters' history before John took over for his evaluation workshop titled; Evaluate to Motivate: Mould A Winner with A Winning Evaluation'. He gave us the importance of evaluation to both the evaluators and the speakers, evaluation methods, and tips and tricks from John himself.

Later on, Janice Lee, CC, CL from TTDI Toastmasters Club gave her third ACM speech on topic "Sell a Product". By asking us (audience) to pretend that Toastmasters is an alien term, she tried to sell / introduce 'TM (toastmasters)" to us.

After that, Cassandra gave us the stunning CC speech number 5 on 'There is no perfect ones, only better looking ones". The word 'stunning' is used for describing her speech simply to acknowledge her boldness in demonstrating us on wearing a bra! Unfortunately, I didn't manage to snap her photos because I was totally taken aback!

Nevertheless, we managed to have 10 min short break and refreshments before continuing with the marathon speech session. Jess Foong, CC, ALB from UNITAR Toastmasters Club gave her first ACM speech on 'Keynote Address for the Asean+3 Youths'. Again, i forgot to snap her photos though she was wearing a cute green turquiose kebaya=).

Last but not least, John Lee gave his interesting speech on 'Let's Talk Scientology'. Then GE Kuok Sum, CC, ALB from TTDI Toastmasters Club called for the evaluation session. Firstly, Qinmei, CC, CL gave her evaluation for Janice followed by Jason Moi, TM for Cassandra's speech. After that, John Lee, ACB, CL gave his evaluation to Jess Foong before Hadzrin, ACB, CL from UEM Academy Toastmasters Club gave his to John.

Later, GE Kuok Sum also called for the role players' report respectively: LE Jason Moi, TM; AC Chee Hong, TM; TK Abel, TM; and finally from himself.

At the end of the session, President Qinmei gave out certificates to the best speaker of the meeting; Cassandra and best evaluator of the meeting; John Lee. After that, there was a little award-giving ceremony from our Immediate Past Area W2 Governor Ernest Wong to our Immediate Past President John Lee for achieving the President Distinguised Club Award 2008/09 term. Congratulations once again to all the winners and our club for the award!

Updates: Our 29th Aug Marathon Speech Meeting

Area W3 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest

It's finally here! The Area W3 Humorous Speech and Speech Evaluation Contest has just wonderfully succeeded with Midvalley Toastmasters Club as the Organising Club. The contest began at 7.30pm with Mohd Hazrin Shah, ACB, CL as the Contest Chair for Humorous Speech.

The contestants are:

1. Chan Chee Hong
2. Moi Kok Lum, Jason
3. Tah Poh Leong
4. Poh Ban Chung
5. Lee Su Jane

After that, we had a quick intermission (about 5 min only!) before we proceeded with our Evaluation contest under the Contest Chair, Gerald Wee, CC. The test speaker for the evening was Sam Thong with his Speech title; "How to Operate A SLR Camera". The contestants who evaluated Sam are:

1. Tah Poh Leong
2. Ernest Wong
3. Christine Ong
4. Jacylyn Wee
5. Moi Kok Lum, Jason

We enjoyed ourselves at Cititel Midvalley bcoz of its good food and its cosy environment! The attendance for tonight was fabulous as it was roughly about 40 people who came for this contest. Besides, each representative from the participating clubs gave us a good laugh and many informative evaluations, and we are pretty sure that it gave the judges a tough time to pick who will be representing us to the division contest!

In the end, the best among the bests were announced by respective contest chairs. The results for the Speech Evaluation Contest are as followed:

3. 2nd-Runner Up: Ernest Wong

While the Humorous Speech winners are:

Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest 2009!

Although we started half an hour late (due to the massive traffic jam in Klang Valley Area), it didn't stop us from anticipating our annual contest; Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest for HELP University College 2009! Firstly, we have our President, Qinmei as our Toastmasters of the Morning welcoming our participants and guests.

The Humorous Speech contests began after the Contest Chair, Jason Lim finished the rules and regulations for the contest as followed:

Later, we had a 15-min short break and refreshments before we continued with Evaluation Contest organized by Contest Chair, Gajendran. The test speaker for our evaluation was Ellie Moey from Bangsar Toastmasters Club with her title "Diamonds are Women's Best Friend".

The contestants were:

And while waiting for the announcemnts of the winers, we had a free air-time so Gajendran and Hazry shared with us some light and funny stories and experiences.

Intercollege Joint Marathon Meeting 2009 report

It is the first time ever that HELP TMC organized the Intercollege Joint Meeting 2009; and with other 4 institutes including HICT Toastmasters Club, University Malaya Toastmasters Club, Nilai UC Toastmasters Club, and Unitar Toastmasters Club, the meeting went on smoothly and successfully; though Stamford College Toastmasters Club couldn't make it as this week is their exam week.

Themed 'Unity Through Mission', we started at 9.36am once all of the invited clubs members and guests arrived. SAA of the meeting; Jee Aik, CC (also the organising chair) gave the first welcoming speech and began the meeting.

Later, President Qinmei, CC, CL gave her presidential address which touches on the themes 'Unity through Mission' and the main objectives of the meeting as to bond with one another in order to reach for the higher goals in Toastmasters journey and life.

It is then Toastmasters of the Morning (TOM) Hui Shan, CC from Unitar Toastmasters Club took over the stage by telling of the brief Toastmasters history, introducing role players, and requesting the Word of the Day from our Language Evaluator (or LE/Grammarian), Jason Moi. The word of the Day was 'synergize'; and the definition is 'to produce greater outcome by working together in groups than working alone'. In line with our theme, the example given to the word is 'One club can energize the meeting but more than one can synergize the meeting!'.

As today's joint meeting is a marathon meeting, we started of with the assignment speeches; skipping the usual TableTopic sessions. Firstly, we have Fun Mun Wah, TM from UM Toastmasters Club gaving his 6th speech based on a love story of 'Jacob and Rachel'. Unlike typical ending 'happily ever after', Mun Wah, Jacob and Rachel left us to wonder what their ending would be after the dissaproval from Rachel's parents. Only time knows. Mun Wah was evaluated from Jeremy, CC from Nilai Toastmasters Club based on the objectives of the 6th project speech.

Secondly, Mike, TM from HICT Toastmasters Club enlightened to our moral values when he re-defined the term 'Homeless'; by refering it to the golden citizens in our society. Based on his 7th Speech objectives, he told us his own experiences and feelings when he visited old folks homes and orphanages. At the end of his speech, he strongly asked us to appreciate our grandparents, parents, and anyone around us who are close and dear as we may not know what will happen tomorrow. Lukreiza, CC from Unitar Toastmasters Club gave her evaluation by the ancronym of M-I-K-E on building and preparing for better speeches in the future.

Next, Michael, TM persuaded us with his thoughts and opinions as he talked on 'The Solution to Our Language Problem"; the currently highly debated questions nationwide. He strongly believed that through refering to the older days; we could reshape our education systems better as it can promote the national integration, social mobility, and more. Victor, CC from HICT Toastmasters Club gave his constuctive comments and credits to Michael while stressing on the purpose of 9th speech project.

Jee Aik, CC called for a break for refeshment and fellowship before continuing with marathon speeches. We enjoyed ourselves when we fully used up 15 minutes (actually, more than 15 minutes) to exchange thoughts and to get to know more about one another's clubs.

After the break, Hui Shan, CC gave her 2nd Advanced Speech by telling her 'Transportation Blunders'. She shared with us her funny 'bad luck day' experience when she was having troubles with the taxi drivers and buses in desperation of going to her workplace. She ended up her story with a line from her boss as 'If you can't get a cab, get a car!'. Gregory Sim, ACB, CL from Nilai Toastmasters Club was her evaluator for her speech.

And last but not least, we have Jeremy, CC to end our marathon speech session when he presented the "Toastmaster of the Year Award" to Gregory, ACB, CL with a 'pink throphy' (it was actually; a pink color bottle). Jason Lim, CC then evaluated his speech while adding and sharing his own opinions and ideas on improvements for Jeremy, CC.

After that, General Evaluator (GE) Ernest Wong, ACB, ALB called for evaluations for the assignment speakers and an open evaluation was given to the audiences. Later, the role players of the meeting; Language Evaluator (LE) Jason Moi, Ah-Counter (AC) Shireen, Timekeeper (TK) Nyuk Jet, and GE Ernest gave their reports accordingly.

As to express our gratitude to Nilai UC Toastmasters Club, HICT Toastmasters Club, Unitar Toastmasters Club and University Malaya Toastmasters Club, we gave them each a banner of inspirational quotes.

And the moment we've been waiting for: Qinmei, CC,CL then presented the certificates for Best Speaker Award to Jeremy,CC and Best Evaluator to Jason Lim,CC respectively. The meetings adjourned at 11.45am before we have the group photo session.

At here, we sincerely thank the clubs and guests who have made their way all from places to make this meeting a successful one. We are looking forward to make this intercollege joint meeting an annual event in the future.

Blog Update for 20th June Meeting

Today’s meeting was special as there were 3 speakers who were not only giving their 10^th project of Competent Communication Manual but they were also having their very last meeting at HELP UC. Besides these 3 we had Jeremy from NUC Toastmasters Club giving his advanced speech.

The long time disappeared member Jack Oh had returned to deliver his speech, entitled “Corruption.” He explained about the different corruption techniques employed such as “Frog” and corruption through sex, by indecent people. He then pointed out that when we ask for bribe from the police, we ourselves also are being corrupted, which is a very wise moral wisdom. A Chinese proverb says (according to Jack Oh), “1 hand clap produces no sound, but 2 hands clap produces sound,” which means you need to work hand in hand for bribery to work, so don’t request for bribe to stop corruption. Don’t abuse power, don’t abuse money, and that will rid of corruption, concluded Jack.

Next, also a long disappeared member, Jo Anne, gave her speech called “Blood Donation.” She told about her experience relating to blood. One was she witnessed a car accident which involved someone’s head badly injured. Another was an experience where the doctor told her to calm her down as he was about to insert the needle onto her arm. We need it one day, so we should donate our blood. Furthermore, blood cannot be manufactured, one of her closing remarks.

The third speaker is Pui Yee with her speech entitled “Be Your Hero.” She began by describing herself as shy and quiet. She was afraid of many things like trying new things (e.g., food), cockroaches, and expectations. As a result, she did not trust herself and perceived no one trusted her, so she yearned to be someone else. This feeling of lack of trust by others and to herself led her to strong interest in certain values found in shows like Power Rangers and Pokemon, writing stories about herself as a hero, and also joining Toastmasters Club to become a hero and save the day. In closing, people are heroes because they fight for what they believe and they take control of their lives. “I will be a hero and I will save the day!” one of her final remarks.

Last, we had Jeremy from NUC Toastmasters Club who talked about “Men are from Mars, women are from Venus.” He began with a story with his girlfriend who asked him if the pink handbag (I think) or blue is better. Blue he suggested but it was a wrong choice by him which he found out later. This is due to different communication style adopted by men and women; men are direct, women are indirect. So when a girl says she has no problems, sit with her, advised Jeremy, because she may mean something else.

The meeting ended with evaluation session and prize giving ceremony:

It also marked the end of Jack Oh, Jo Anne, and Pui Yee’s Toastmasters journey at HELP University College. Overall, it was a unique meeting with only 4 speakers for a marathon meeting.

Taking on the Division

An overdue post ladies and gentlemen, but here it is - HELP UC Toastmasters Club at the Division W International Speech and Table Topics Contest 2009. This year's contest was held at Sunway University College.

The last time HELP UC came this far was during President John Lee's triumphant march to the District Evaluation contest. And it was his presence, guidance and coaching that inspired our 2 representatives this time - Gajendran for Table Topics and Jason Lim for International Speech.

Well, Jason seems to be focusing, Gajen might be wondering whether he shaved properly or not. Anyway, there was a good turnout and the crowd was ready for quality speeches and table topics.

The competition was stiff ladies and gentleman, but we are proud to announce that for Table Topics, our champion Gajendran emerged as the FIRST RUNNER UP!

As for the International Speech category, Jason Lim emerged as the CHAMPION!

Here he is being presented with the challenge trophy flanked by (from left) Area W2 governor Ernest Wong, Gajendran, John Lee and Division Governor Dr. Sharon Tong.

Gajen and Jason are very pleased with themselves, but John is already plotting the next round. Nonetheless, we stayed true to our student roots by ending the day with a round of picture-taking (aka camwhoring)

Today, our club was moved from our usual meeting place, nonetheless we had an animated and productive meeting nonetheless.

We had visitors from DKC Toastmasters Club with one guest even giving a speech. At the same time, we had the great honour of hosting the Division B International Speech Champion Dennis Wee who gave his competition speech "Find The Shark" It was indeed an educational meeting for our members.

At the same time our own members did not shirk from the challenge. Micheal, Jack Oh and Joanne all gave speeches - advancing the educational purposes of our club.

On the 14th of Feb 2009, many people gathered in a single location to bear witness to an highly-anticipated event. No, it was not a mass marriage ceremony, it was HELP UC Toastmasters' Club International Speech and Table Topics Contest 2009!

It was an amazing meeting with new guests and members around!

The meeting started at approximately 9:35am. The guests and members were asked to introduced themselves and tell us about their wish for Chinese New Year. Most of the people wished to have more ang pows.

There are a number of new guests came to the meeting. It seems like the membership drive is working. Good job toastmasters!

Then, it was Table Topic Session which conducted by the Table Topic Master – Jee Aik a.k.a the SAA of the club. Jee Aik has prepared a few non-sense topics for the guests and members to attempt.

The table topic session for this meeting is a bit longer as there are only three assignment speeches. In total, there are six volunteers for the table topic session.

After having six volunteers giving their impromptu speeches, then, it was the table topic evaluator – Teh, from the Midvalley Toastmaster Club to evaluate the TT Speakers. Among the six TT speakers, there are 3 of them were first timer which is Kai Shen, Lavania and Sean. Congratulation to them!

It was then having the speeches from the assignment speakers. There were two ice breaker speeches from Jack Oh and Jo An.
First assignment speaker was Jack Oh with the title of “Myself”. Jack Oh is from Ipoh, Perak. Currently, he is studying Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering at University Malaya and having industrial training in Proton. He loves Chinese foods and don’t like to study but learning. Jack Oh said, learn through experience. We don’t study experience. I agree (: He has tortoise as a pet at home because it is easy to take care of.

Next, it was Jaime had her CCM #3 with the title of C’s and R’s in Anger Management. Jaime told us that anger will affect other people and will leave a wound on the person. So, how can we control our anger? Here comes the C’s and R’s Jaime introduced to us.
1st R: Relax – Take a deep breath, change a position when you’re angry
2nd R: Resolve – Find out the cause of the problem, root it and solve it.
1st C: Communicate – So as to create a fair situation, think and to say, to give time to express each other’s feeling.
2nd C: Cognitive Restructuring – Changing the negative thought to positive one and beware of the words like “Never” or “Always” used in the discussion.

The third assignment speaker was Jo An “Who am I”. Jo An is also having training at Proton with Jack Oh. Jo An told us that she loves Hong Kong dramas and dislike to stand in front of the crowd and afraid of having eye contact with the others.

After that, it was Evaluation session that conducted by the General Evaluator – Gajendran. He called for evaluations for the assignment speakers which is Jason Lim evaluating Jack Oh, Jee Aik evaluating Jaime and Qinmei evaluating Jo An.

The meeting was a successful one having members and a number of new guests to joined the meeting which added a lot of spice to the meeting. Hopefully there are new members joining!

Though it was another typical Toastmasters’ meeting, but this meeting was the first meeting in 2009; and 2009 is the 6th year since HELP University College International Toastmasters Club first established in 2003. John, the President was unable to present on the meeting and so the presidential address was taken over by Gajendran, the VP-E*.

Table topic session is always the ‘warm-up’ session to us; and this time, Michael (as the TTM*) awoke us with his interesting topics. To begin with, instead of asking us to pick a number for topic, he asked us to choose the level of difficulty for the topic to talk about.

First volunteer was Chee Hong who selected ‘Hard’ question, and his question was “If a friend of yours set a goal too high –will you tell him straight to face that he cannot achieve it or you will just keep quiet about it?” Well, instead of choosing the first option or the second choice, he gave his third alternative: To first change our point of view in believing that his friend can achieve the goal; and he related this to his past experience with a friend of him who achieved something that Chee Hong thought he couldn’t achieve in the beginning.

Second volunteer was Jaime who chose the ‘Medium’ question: In your opinion, which part in our education that you hate the most; but turn out to be important? In her speech, she told about the homework and assignments are what she hated in education; but marked the significance of them in everyday’s life. On the other hand, Jack chose the ‘Hard’ question and his question (perhaps the toughest amongst all) was this: “Why do you wear your clothes?” and Jack responded with the importance of wearing clothes through civilization and logical needs to wear it. Next was Ernest who also chosen ‘Hard’ question: ..Do you consider luck and chance; fair? He twisted the question a little bit by instead of stating that luck and chance are fair; he made the statement that if we believe that luck is there; there will be luck; if we believe that chances are there; there will be chances for you.

Finally, since Michael ran out of the ‘Hard’ question, Kang Han selected the ‘Easy’ question: “What is your favourite song?” Though it was a simple question, he managed to give the speech by stating the details of the song, and the reasons he love the song; “The Man who cannot be Moved by The Script”. After the session, the volunteers were evaluated by Gajendran on their strength and improvements to make.

Now, for the second part of our meeting was the regular assignment speeches session. First, Kang Han gave his CCM#5* speech with the title ‘T.I.R.E’. Based on his speech, ‘T.I.R.E’ was the acronym for the “Think out of the Box, Interaction, Relax and Error” tips on being creative.

Cassandra was the second to gave her third speech on ‘One Step Closer, Never Too Late’ which touches on the importance and the need of taking care of our face as it is the first part of the body that we will be judged on. In her speech, she taught us the 3 basic steps on cleaning face: Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize.

After that, Jee Aik gave us the insights on distinguishing between bias, presupposition, assumption and how they are related through examples in his CCM#8 Speech title: Facts Speak for Themselves?

Last but not least, Ernest completed his ACM#4* speech on ‘Struggle, Bloody, Satisfaction’ on his witty and entertaining ‘deepest, darkest secret’ of his in face saloon. After which, each of the speaker was then evaluated by their respective evaluator; Gajendran, Jee Aik, Qinmei, and Gajendran.

Calls for report came after the evaluation was presented by LE* Denise, TK* Kevin and AC* Faiq headed by GE* Chee Hong. Finally, the Table topics and assignment speech prizes session was lined by Ernest as the Best Table Topic Speaker and Best Assignment Speaker; Gajendran as the Best Evaluator. Congratulations to both of them!

*P/S: If you are curious of what is VP-E, SAA, TOM, TTM, AC, TK, GE, LE, ACM#, CCM#, and other acronym, maybe it’s a high time that you should pay our club meeting a visit! (or two, three, four....)

The last meeting of 2008

The meeting started at approximately 9:40am. This was the last toastmasters meeting for the year 2008! A brand new year is coming people!

Guests and members were asked to introduced themselves and also tell us the goal that they’ve set for the coming year 2009!
After the introductions by the SAA – Abel, the control was then passed to John to present his presidential address. After that, it was Ernest, the toastmaster of the morning took over the control.
After that was the Table Topic Master – Fun, to conduct the table topic section. Fun has prepared total 15 inspiring topics for the volunteers to choose from.

The first volunteer was Abel who is also the SAA of the meeting. The topic he has chosen was “Excited. Get really excited about today.” He thought for a while and tells us what is excited about today which is the toastmaster meeting and a brand new year is coming.

I was the next volunteer for the table topic section, attempted the topic “Win. Winning is not everything”. I said that winning is not everything; the process of achieving something is already winning.
The third volunteer was Ka Chuan with the topic “Shut up! Move on”. Ka Chuan has talked about him making decision to back from UK to finish his A-levels at Malaysia.

Last but not least, it was Lay Choo attempted table topic with title “Today, not tomorrow”. Lay Choo also tell us why are the successful people are successful. That is because they will complete the things that they need to do on that day and will never leave it to tomorrow. Lay Choo’s speech was really inspiring one and she was voted to be the best table topic speaker of the day. Congratulation!

The table topic speakers were then evaluated by Qinmei. She pointed out the strength of each speaker and areas of improvement.
It was then the assignment speakers to present their speech. Firstly, it was by Faiq having his Ice Breaker Speech with the title “People Change”. Faiq talked about his achievement in athletes, the classical old songs that he like especially by Alvis Bradley. He also showed us his skill on playing yoyo which really caught the audiences’ attention. The evaluator for this speech was Jason Lim.

Second assignment speech speaker was by Jee Aik doing his CCM #7 with the title “Mysterious Creatures Co-existed with us”. Jee Aik has showed us a bird type thingy and asked us whether we know its name if we saw it flying in the sky. We didn’t know. Jee Aik then said it was UFO – Unidentified flying object. This brought a laugh bomb to us. It was a humorous one. Jee Aik then told us that it was a dinosaur. With the credible sources that Jee Aik has provided to us, there’s a reason to believe that dinosaur do exists. We’ve understand more about dinosaur through the speech Jee Aik presented.

Third assignment speech speaker was our president John presenting his ACM #5 “The Ballot or the Bullet”, evaluated by Lay Choo. He talked about the black and white community, which the black fight for the freedom. It’s either to achieve the freedom or to die in achieve them. It was very interesting.

After the break, we have Lay Choo to present her ACM#4 “Demystifying Audit”. Lay Choo has explained hows the internal audit works. She also conducted a Q&A session with the audience in order to let the audience understands more. She also introduced a FAMA Association to us which stands for Father-Mother association.

As usual, after the assignment speech session, it was evaluation session by the evaluators and calls for reports from the role players. All the role players have done a good job in giving a detail report. Jee Aik as the Language Evaluator has done an impressive job by explaining to us. Jack, first time as the Ah-Counter has done a good job also. Well done toastmasters!
The meeting has come to an end. The general evaluator – Chee Hong has evaluated the progress of the meeting. Then, it was John to deliver his closing address.

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveler, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!” by Charles Dickens.

I as the SAA of the meeting started the meeting with the quote above and invite toastmasters and guests to introduce themselves and tell me about the gift they wish to receive for this Christmas and why.

Then, it was Table Topic Section, Ernest as the Table Topic Master has prepared 5 Christmas characters for the volunteers to choose. There are Santa Claus, Santarina, Reindeer, Elf and Angel.

The first volunteer was Ka Chuan. He chose Santa Claus. He is the Santa Claus and was stuck in the chimney. His task was to explain to the owner of the house who found him stuck in the chimney. Ka Chuan stated that he will wish them a Merry Christmas and grab something from the house to give the kids.

The second volunteer was Jee Aik. He wanted to be an angel. He was asked to sing a song that he would like to sing to the earth. Jee Aik was struggling and the audiences were all looking forward for Jee Aik to sing! But at last Jee Aik chose to return to the earth and be a toastmaster because he really couldn’t think of any song.

The third volunteer was Meyya. He chose to be a Santarina and asked to convince Santa Claus to keep fit by telling him how hot ‘she’ was. The speech he gave was humorous. He event told us his hips is only 27 inches and has a flat tummy. We’ll receive a warm welcome if we visit his club as he is hot. Santa Claus’s temperature will increase because he is HOT!

The last volunteer was Gajendran. Gajendran’s character was a reindeer. There are vacancy for reindeer and tell us how would he get the job. He said that he is able to go with Santa Claus on time. Instead of being the charming prince on a horse, he will be charming Santa on a reindeer.

Overall, the table topic section has warmed up the atmosphere of the meeting. Next was Qinmei as the Table Topic Evaluator to evaluate all the speakers. I’m sure everyone has done a good job. Stepping out to the stage and to attempting a topic you never prepared and to speak for 2 minutes is already a great start in Toastmasters Club.

Next, the toastmaster of the morning Jason Moi introduces the assignment speakers for their assignment speech. First was Jason Moi himself presenting his CCM #7, title “The Meaning of Christmas” and it was evaluated by Qinmei. Christmas is now more commercialize. Christmas is actually a peaceful and a gathering day.

Next, was Gajendran doing his CCM #6, title “Partying with Lawyers”. Gajendran told us about his experience partying with his law lecturers. It turned out to be a fun party that he didn’t thought of. Gajendran concluded the speech by saying that the Malaysia Law is secured because there are future comedian inside.

Then, it was John, our president giving his ACM #4, “The Importance of being Earnest”.

There is exception for this meeting because we have a 30minutes break for the guests and the toastmaster to have savour the sweetness of Christmas. We’ve prepared cakes, cookies and drinks for the guests and toastmasters.

Then, it was the general evaluator Chee Hong call for the evaluations for the assignment speakers. First assignment speaker Jason Moi was evaluated by Qinmei. Second assignment speaker Gajendran was evaluated by Jee Aik. Last but not least, third assignment speaker John was evaluated by Joyce.

The members have prepared some chocolates as gifts for the best table topic speaker, best assignment speaker and the best evaluator. The best table topic speaker and the best assignment speaker goes to -----

The meeting ended with the general evaluator Chee Hong for evaluating the progress of the meeting and closing address by the president John Lee.

SAA feels disturbed seeking members when he is not free but likes disturbing members when he is too free.

November month was such a busy month for me! Since the previous meeting, I could only contact members on Friday to fill up empty roles I was not free on other days. Certainly not my style of managing matters! When I was having my holidays in the last semester, it was fun “disturbing” members to fill up roles, but for November, it was “disturbing,” but adventurous as the stress makes it exciting...haha… I am just expressing my feelings for fun in this paragraph and the above topic is only for this paragraph…haha… The following paragraphs are regarding the meeting.

For today’s meeting, there were problems like missing roles players which was not settled until that morning. Luckily, members are proactive, so they made suggestions and solved the problems for me. For unknown reason, this meeting only 11 members (including 1 guest) came. Therefore, it is no surprise that some role players had to dual play.

Qinmei, as SAA, called meeting to order and threw an interesting question, “If you were an SAA, what would your question be?” This question allowed many to throw in humorous replies. For example, Boon Keong said his question would be what you would think my question would be if I am the SAA.

Ka Chaun, first time TOM, came and asked role players to introduce themselves. Next, John gave his presidential address and made us of Jee Aik’s comment during the introduction session by Qinmei, “Why is SAA called sergeant-at-arms?” Then he brought up the question of the SAA’s purpose which led to asking us the purpose of giving speech and filling up our manuals.

Then we had our Table Topics session conducted by Michael. He gave us 2 broad selections of topics: interesting, challenging. After selecting one of the broad topics, he showed the speaker a topics list and the speaker was to select one. The first speaker was Ernest. His message was that we should overcome challenges and avoiding is not an option. The second speaker was Qinmei. She concluded money is the world’s greatest injustice and it is also the solution to it. Third was Benny from Maxis Toastmasters, who concluded that fame is a good thing regardless of one’s intention. Fourth was Jee Aik. He told about his first taxi ride alone as an example of courage. The last speaker was Boon Keong who said learning from mistakes when we fail is as or more valuable than just winning. We then had our long, lost member, Ashrel as our evaluator who was or is back in Toastmasters.

Now came the assignment speeches session. The first was Michael with his topic “Dislocated, Disturbed, Disappointed.” He was performing martial arts as he was describing but got his arm dislocated in the story. He was disturbed and sought help but was disappointed with that help. He closed by saying that you have the abilities because you are able. Next was Ernest who was interviewed by Boon Keong, acting as radio talk show host, about his Cheras community organization to make Cheras a better and safer place. Last was John who did a monodrama. He was role playing Jesus’s final moments at Gethsamene talking with God in frustration before he got arrested.

After the speeches was the evaluation session. First time role players recognized were Mustafa as Timekeeper and Ka Chuan as Toastmaster of the Morning. Final was the presidential address and prize giving ceremony. The best Table Topics speaker went to Jee Aik. The best assignment speaker and evaluator went to John.

Overall, the meeting was dynamic despite few role players and low attendance. Quantity does not always make a good outcome; quality makes a good outcome too. Both quantity and quality are important for a successful meeting. Until next time, let’s hope to see both quantity and quality in our future meetings!

Once again, our trail-blazing president John Lee has done our club proud.

At the recent District 51 Evaluation Contest, he has beaten out many other distinguished competitors to emerge as the RUNNER UP

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not the club or area or even division contest, John has gone INTERNATIONAL.

The level of his accolades raises the bar so high that it is only when he does not win that we are surprised.

Ladies and gentlemen, please give your respect and acclaimation to our president who will continue to set the standards for all associated with our club.

Some look forward to the first of every month for a variety of reasons, we at HELP UC Toastmasters Club are waiting on the first with anticipation because we have a Toastmasters meeting!

This week's meeting was made very special by the fact that one of our members has reached a milestone. Let us all put our hands together for our Treasurer, Miss Huang Qin Mei who has finished her Competent Communicator's Manual! Keep it up!

In attendance was none other than UEM Academy President Hadzrin who was also the Best Evaluator for the Day.

As mentioned, the next generation of our club was already stepping up, with the likes of Cassandra Wong coming to the fore.

Not to be left out, our exco also made their presence felt with the VPPR Jason Lim bagging the Best Assignment Speaker award for this meeting.

It was another beautiful and lovely Saturday morning (well, quite figuratively) in DSA Room last Saturday’s Toastmaster Meeting. Meetings started exactly around approximately 9.40am, and BK, as the SAA of the Day started the meeting by asking us to introduce ourselves and ask us what the things we are grateful about. After that, John gave his presidential speech with the theme ‘Fight’ in our studies, Toastmasters and life.

Next, it was Cassandra’s first time to become a Table Topic Masters, and she gave interesting titles to 5 volunteers. First, Merryn gave his speech based on the title ‘Don’t take life too seriously’ by telling his experiences working in a firm; he said that if we take things too serious, we will in the end lose more things. Second volunteer for the Table Topic section was Gajendran, where we were really curious when he got the title ‘Tell us about your Dream’. He talked about his dream of becoming successful lawyer, much influenced by his uncle, who is a famous and successful lawyer. However, he said that his uncle told him these: “Do not do law if you see me as a lawyer and successful, do law because you think YOU can be successful in law”. Next up, Paul was given the title ‘Behind a successful man is a surprised woman’. He expressed his gratitude towards Ka Chuan’s mother, who supported his studies and funded his entire education. On the other hand, Lourdes was talking about her ‘pursuit of happiness in life’ by telling us about seeking peace and the importance of her family to her. Finally, BK offered himself to talk about ‘If you could be any age for a week, what age you would be and why’. At the beginning he said that he don’t want to go back to his younger days; but later he said he would be delighted if he could return to his fifth former life, whereby he had great friends and teachers who supported him to study hard for SPM and prove to his parents, friends, and most importantly, himself. Then Chee Hong as the TT Evaluator gave his evaluation.

As usual, after the evaluation there was the assignment speeches section. Ka Chuan, who have just joined in not too long ago gave his 3rd speech about his title ‘Think about It’, stressing about the importance of education in our life, and asking us to rethink the value of education today. Next, Jason Moi preceded his 6th speech with an interesting title ‘Are you M.A.D. enough?” To be M.A.D. or Make A Difference, there are three steps to be followed; do not think straight, be gay in everything we do, and throw the conscience away in order to be creative and unique such as Thomas E. Edison who created the light bulb, and other initially, well, considered him as ‘M.A.D’. Qinmei also enlighten us with her witty speech about ‘Evolution of A Name’ whereby she talked how different people could actually wrongly pronounced her surname, her name, and spaces between her name. She taught us the proper way of pronouncing her name correctly; which Qin actually pronounced as ‘Ch-in’ instead of ‘Que-in’ of ‘King-in’. Finally, John gave his Advanced CM about Presenting an Award to ‘Qin Mei’, as she ‘set examples for other women to follow’, where his speech was full of humor elements, which made us laughed during the speech.

After that, General Evaluator of the Day Ernest (@Immediate Past President & Area Governor) gave his overall evaluation on the meeting. The assignment speeches were evaluated by Gajendran, Qinmei, John and Ernest respectively. Finally, the Best Table Topic Speaker was given to Gajendran while the best assignment speaker was Jason Moi, and the best evaluator of the day was John Lee.

The meeting started off with first time SAA, Cassandra, asking everybody to introduce themselves as well as share with the audience on what's so special about themselves.

After the introductions, John took over the stage to give his presidential address. Taking the cue from the SAA of the morning, he centred his speech on being different and making a difference, and how we should keep trying to fight off indifference. In addition, he also took the opportunity to remind the audience to attend Division W's humorous speech and evaluation contest on this coming Saturday, 25th October.

Next up, Toastmaster of the Morning, Book Keong, took over. He gave a brief history of Toastmasters International before asking the Grammarian of the day, Jason Lim, for the Word of the Day. The Word of the Day was epitome, which was, for the first time, used more than a few times throughout the meeting.

The meeting then proceeded with the Table Topics session, conducted by first-time Table Topics Master, Ka Chuan. He did an admirable job, giving a brief introduction of the session for guests and new members before moving on with the session.

The first speaker was yours truly, Pui Yee, who was 'rewarded' for her courage (ahem) with a topic called 'Donkey' (thanks a lot TTM). Yours truly went on to babble about cute donkeys and stubbornness, and ending the speech with a useful piece of advice – don't be a donkey.

The second brave soul was Jee Aik, who attempted the speech topic, 'Great minds think alike'. He gave a interesting twist to the title, provoking the audience's thoughts by saying, 'Great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ'.

After that, the third speaker, Abel, took the stage. His topic was, 'You have invented the first time machine, what would you do with it?'. Surprisingly, he said that he would travel back to the era of World War II to see the movers and shakers of the world who altered the course of human history forever.

Last but not least, Jason Lim, who gave an amazing performance when he talked about 'How I wish to be the opposite gender'. His speech prompted laughs and entertained the audience so much so that he was voted the Best Table Topics Speaker.

Next up was the evaluation session, conducted by the always animated Jason Moi.

The meeting proceeded with the assignment speeches. Ka Chuan, doing his CCM#2, gave a thought-provoking speech titled, 'Do you think what you think you think?', in which he questioned our very existence.

The second speaker, also doing CCM#2, was Cassandra. She gave a hilarious speech titled, 'I promised to be safe'. She recounted her experience in learning how to drive and although it was funny, it was a good reminder for the rest of us to be careful while on the roads.

The third speaker was our regular guest from UEM Academy, Hedzrin. He also gave a humourous speech titled 'Why so shy?' from the AC manual.

Last but not least, our very own Immediate Past President, Ernest, gave a speech from the AC manual titled 'You can be a better communicator'. He was awarded Best Assignment Speaker.

Toastmasters Meeting on the 27th September commenced exactly at 9.38am. Members and guests introduced themselves to break the ice and get the meeting up and running.

Denise, the table topics master, presented unique idioms as the day’s table topic titles and everyone on the floor are given the opportunity to speak based on the idiom. It was quite tough as speakers are to relate a story to the idiom. Nevertheless, the volunteers managed to speak their way through with good vocals and points. There were five speakers altogether, namely Joshua, a second timer as a guest at our club, Fun from UM toastmasters club, Boon Keong, Jamie and Ka Chuan. Micheal was the evaluator and for his evaluation, he offered praises for the speakers’ strong points. He also highlighted their weaknesses and suggested ways of improvement. It was a thorough evaluation.

Moving on, we had 2 ice breaker speeches. The first is given by Cassandra, titled “You will never know”. Her topic was interesting as we get to know things which we may never have guessed. Her speech contains bits and pieces of her life and incidents which mattered deeply to her. Second icebreaker speech was presented by Ka Chuan. He started his speech by narrating briefly about his birth which I found was really interesting. He moved to talk about his family and his involvement in sports. From his speech everyone got to know him as a good sportsman who can play many sports.

Third speech of the day was by Jamie titled the past and the future. She spoke about making decisions in life and the importance of following up with the decisions we made. It was a speech full of values we can absorb and put into practice. Last speech was by John Lee titled “The Roast”. It was a humorous speech as John “roasted” two “fictional” characters named Gajendran and Qinmei who were getting married. John’s speech left the audience roaring with laughter.

Next was the evaluation session. General evaluator Gajendran invited his team of evaluators to evaluate the speakers. First evaluator was Jee Aik, followed by John Lee, me(Chee Hoong) and lastly Qinmei. The evaluators offered compliments to the 1st timers Cassandra and Ka Chuan and they also gave sound advice to them. I pointed out the good points and weaknesses of Jamie while Qinmei did similarly for her evaluation. Our aim is to assist in any way we can to anhance their speaking skills. General evaluator also offered some pointers for the speakers to consider. The evaluation session was completed with the Ah counter report by Faiq, Timekeeper report by Pui Yee and language evaluator report by Qinmei.

The final agenda is the presidential address by John Lee. John Lee promoted the idea of visiting other clubs to gain exposure as well as contacts. He also mentioned the mentor-mentee system for our club which have been revived. The winners for best table topic speaker, best assignment speaker and best evaluator was announced. The champion for the day for best table topic speaker was Boon Keong. Best assignment speaker goes to John Lee while best evaluator falls on the hands of Qinmei. Congrats to everyone above. That ended our meeting for the day. I hope that everyone gained something from it and make the best they can out of their experience at HELP toastmasters club meeting.

With bated breath and beating hearts we anticipated the Area W2 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. And it has finally arrived!

Our contest chair was none other than Sai Masters Toastmasters Club president himself, Suresh!

Well, straight into the action, here are the various contestants in action for the humorous speech. In action were the representatives from the 5 clubs in area W2 namely HELP, Hasil, Exact ADC, Ernst&Young and UEM Academy.

After a short break for refreshments, the evaluation contest got underway with our test speaker the charming Gene Lau.

After each contestant presented their evaluation, it was time for the judges to decide the winners to represent the area in the upcoming division W contest.

And now ladies and gentlemen, presenting the winner of Area W2's Humorous Speech Contest 2008 *drumroll please*

6th September - The eve of the area contest

At around 9.35am, Faiq, Sergeant-at-Arms for the day, called the meeting to order and warmed us up for public speaking by posing this question: Why did you join Toastmasters and how has it benefitted you?

Club President John Lee then proceeded to give his presidential address which highlighted that our club’s 99.9% college student population (excluding Ernest) brought youthful energy to other Toastmasters Clubs whose members are already working middle age adults.

Boon Keong, The Table Topics Master gave distinctly original Table Topics like “Why Did You Paint Your House Pink?” and “Why Do You Live Next to a Nuclear Power Plant?” And of course, we all sat back to enjoy the ensuing nonsensical oratory performance.

The meeting continued with the prepared speeches of the day. Jason Moi presented a speech that extracted valuable lessons from fishing to be applied in daily life. Jee Aik gave a modified version of his speech entitled “An Unusual Person” which was first presented during this year’s club Humorous Contest.

After the break, Qinmei then presented her speech entitled “Colours.” She explained the emotions usually associated with colours and what the colours meant to her.

Last but not least, Ernest the Area governor was up! He gave a speech entitled “My Youth Symptom.” Ernest described the acne problems he faced during his later teenage years and how it destroyed his “handsome face” (Quoted directly from speech), but also how it wrecked his self-esteem as well. His speech was not only entertaining but also taught us a valuable lesson that we should not dwell solely on our weaknesses but focus on our strengths.

As the meeting drew to a close, the anticipation grew as we are just a few more hours away from the Area W2 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest which our club will be proudly hosting. Pictures are coming soon! Hang on to your hats ladies and gentlemen!

30th August - Olympic Hangover and Merdeka Anticipation

Today's toastmaster meeting was somewhat caught between 2 events. On one hand, many were still recovering from an Olympic hangover while others were in anticipation of our National Day the next day. However, this did not stop us from having a great meeting as well as start gearing up for the Area Contest which will be held the following week.

The meeting kicked off with SAA Denise who asked us to state our hope for our beloved country's future. We were joined by some very distinguished guest such as the Area W2 Gvernor Ernest Wong, University Malaya Toastmaster's Club president Kimmy Foo and UEM Academy president Hadzrin.

Dennis Wee, a frequent visitor to our club visited us today to give a humorous speech in anticipation of next week's area contest.

Also in action was our Club president giving an eulogy from The Advanced communicator's manual.

All in all, it was once again an entertaining and educational meeting.

The Instllation dinner - from the Perspective of our SAA

Ashrel, Ming Haur, Pui Yee and I arrived at the Penthouse Menara Choy Fook On building. We were figuring the entrance into the building. Then Kevin arrived and bumped into us, followed by Boon Keong. Finally, we found the right way which was through the car park basement. I thought the Maharaj Restaurant was located on the first floor but turned out to be way higher than that!

We reached the floor and entered Maharaj Restaurant. As we walked into the room where the dinner was held, we saw most of the other members had already arrived, seated at their respective tables in high casual attire. The hospitable Gajendran welcomed and greeted each of us as we walked in. In there, the room looked like as if I was in the medieval age; it was decorated with two huge portraits that looked like king figures and triangle banners hung on the edges of the wall. This is from a perspective of a person who had never been into an Indian restaurant apart from mamak stalls. It was a great experience.

In one part of the dinner, one crowd (my crowd) stated telling lame jokes that caused uproar of laughter. “So this is what Toastmasters do when there are not in Toastmasters!” Boon Keong said. Most of the lame jokes were so lame that it I was lost at sea. They laughed at me when I was figuring hard. Jason Moi decided to tell what he called sophisticated joke (why is the portrait innocent?), hoping I would understand but I did not. “Wow, not even my sophisticated joke worked!” he said in surprise and the crowd laughed. Later on, somehow they were talking about the “Little Mermaid” music and imitating it. They imitated sounded so funny for me that I laughed out loud. “Wow, this one he gets it! We finally got him to laugh!” someone remarked.

Another part was the pick-up lines. Jason Lim had a lot of pick-up-lines which demonstrated his strong knowledge in it. However, some content of pick-up-lines sounded more for 18-above audience, so I thought it was inappropriate as I know some members below that age!

Later on, there was a Table Topics session! I was expecting some Karaoke actually. The first speaker, Boon Keong, spoke how he became a feminist. He said he likes girls while does not like guys as guys are mean. For example, John was mean to give him this tough topic, Boon Keong said. Next was Micheal, the long lost member who has returned from our club. Boon Keong begins, Micheal returns (this sentence is related to a lame joke)! He told us why he likes washing dishes. He likes to see his handsome face in the clean reflection of cutlery and just cannot stand dirty dishes like the ones on our tables (Qinmei, I have figured out why it is called Table Topics, lol…). Next was Kimmy, from UM Toastmasters Club. She told us the secret ingredient for her lustrous hair which was nothing more than her natural saliva! Yikes! After that was Jason Moi who was given the topic about his relationship with a 35-year-old woman. “John! Don’t you dare call her 35! She’s 17 in my heart!” And the way he expressed his feelings was so convincing that it sounded he really has one! Lastly came Jason Lim who told us why he should be the next president of the United States. One, he has Boon Keong as his feminist; two, he has Micheal to “clean” the country.

At the end of the dinner, Gajendran thanked everyone for coming. However, some still had not enough fun, so they decided to hang at mamak stall while some had gone home. Wonder how long did they hang out… Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable dinner as members were kept laughing throughout the night.

Another Toastmasters meeting has arrived. The meeting began a 9.36am. The audience was asked by the SAA, Boon Keong, how they knew about Toastmasters and everyone shared their story. The control then was passed to the president, John, who gave his presidential speech. He said all of us have a common goal: to communicate better. He hopes our relationship will be fostered through working towards the common goal. After that the TOM, Denise, took control. This was her very first time playing the TOM role. She told the TM history, requested the word of the day. The TOM role went smoothly and according to plan.

During the assignment speeches session, Kang Han gave his first assgnment speech, entitled“Why So Serious?” He was persuading the audience to watch the “Dark Night” movie. Reasons were: the seriousness of the director, the great cast, and Heath Ledger’s (Joker) great acting. He made many interesting evaluation points which showed his critical thinking skill for movies. Good job Kang Han! Looking forward to your next speech!

Then came Jook Yew who presented “Lying is the Best Policy.” Another persuasive message but instead of movie, it was ethic value. He told us how his parents lied to him about Santa clause to make him to behave well. As long as lying is done with good intention, it is good, according to Jook Yew.

After the break, Han Lian delivered his speech “Death Penalty, What Do You Know About It?” He argued that death penalty is cruel, unfair to the wrongly convicted, and destroys right to life. He told us how some torture methods were employed inhumanely and illustrated the one very vividly that it sent shiver down my spine!

Then came the last speaker, John, with his speech entitled “A Toast.” “Welcome to the Britney Spears Fan Club!” he said, and audience burst into laughter. He commended the striking things Britney Spears did, sarcastically, such as the kissing of a girl and having the shortest marriage. At the end, he gave a toast.

Then came the evaluation session. Qinmei evaluated Kang Han’s speech. It was her first time evaluating a speech, and she just completed her sixth project only last week. Ming Haur evaluated Jook Yew, Hedzri evaluated Han Lian, and Ernest evaluated John. Next were reports from other role players: Kevin (First time LE, was asked to play only that day.) Pui Yee (AC), Jason Moi, and Hadzrin (GE).

After the evaluation session was a workshop entitled “How to Organize a Successful Contest” by our area governor, Ernest. He briefed us the things needed to be done and considered before and during a contest. Then came the Q&A session where it was a fruitful discussion.

Lastly, John who concluded the meeting at the end of the day. The best speaker was himself while the best evaluator was Ernest. He thanked the guests and restated the message that HELP Toastmasters Club will emerge as champion in the Division W. The meeting ended at 11.53am.

19th July - Joint meeting with Sai Masters

19th July marked another chapter in our Club's progress with the advent of a joint meeting with Sai Masters Toastmasters Club. Both club exco members put much effort into organising this joint meeting knowing that it would benefit both clubs greatly in terms of education as well as strengthening the bonds between both these Presidents Distinguished Clubs.

The meeting kicked off with Sai Masters President Suresh Mohan giving his presidential address followed by HUC's president John Lee.

The Area W2 Governor and former president of HELP UC Ernest Wong attended the meeting with the added role of being the Table Topics Evaluator as well.

As for the speech slots, each club was given two each, HELP's slots were taken up by Jason Lim and Qin Mei, whereas Sai Masters' slots were allotted to Chandra Mohan and Kumara Devi.

The Area W2 Governor Ernest was not the only VIP guest in attendance, Dr. Devi Menon, the Area W1 Governor was also in attendance and she played the role of General Evaluator for the day.

All in all, it was a great occasion, full of laughter and fellowship, HELP looks forward to many more meetings as fruitful as this.

5th July - A Fresh Start

5 July 2008 marked the new term. It was a brand new beginning, with new committee members. The atmosphere felt fresh. Already small changes were being made.

The meeting started 7 minutes late, with Qinmei as the Sergeant-At-Arms (SAA) asking everyone to introduce themselves and tell everyone what they hope to achieve in the coming week. Since the bulk of the members were A-Levels students, most of them were hoping to get used to college life once again or accustom to the new timetables.

After Qinmei’s welcoming address, it was John’s turn to give his first ever presidential address as the new president of the club. In his speech, he spoke about time. According to John, there is a time to do things, a time to focus and limited time to achieve our goals. He also reminded us on how we need to work hard to achieve the President’s Distinguished Award yet again this year.

Next up was Han Lian as the Toastmaster of the Morning (TOM) with his ‘warming up the audience’ session. He started off by asking the audience to take a deep breath as they did not look as awake and alert as they should be. The word of the day ‘attentive’ was then introduced by the Language Evaluator (LE), Kang Han.

Not before long, it was time for the ever exciting table topics session. The Table Topics Master (TTM), Jee Aik, took a different approach this time around. Before he asked for volunteers, he announced the topics. If within 10 seconds, no one volunteers to speak, he would choose them at random.

The first topic was ‘no man is an island’, which Han Lian volunteered to speak about. He spoke about how he discovered that when he was transferred to Inti Nilai which was in the middle of a jungle.

The second topic, ‘money is everything’ was presented by Ernest, our Immediate Past President (IPP), who made the effort to come even though he was no longer the president of our club. The word ‘money’ caught his attention, and this made him volunteer to speak about the topic. However, on his way to the stage, he forgot the topic. In the end, he spoke about how money saved him when he was stopped at a police road block.

The third topic, being ‘family is more important than friends’ was spoken about by Nikki, a first timer at our club. She reminded everyone that no matter how many friends we have, we will still turn to our families in the end.

The fourth topic was ‘evil people can become good people’. This topic was presented by Commander Anthony who told us how evil people can guide good people. Not only can evil people become good people, but also good people can become evil people.

The fifth and final topic was ‘sharing is caring’ which was spoken about by Pui Yee. She told us how she learnt to share, and that has brought her relationship with her brother closer. She said that you share because you care.

When the table topics session was over, Chee Hoong was called upon as the Table Topics Evaluator (TTE) to give his evaluation on each speaker. He was commended for his improvement in terms of giving more detailed and concise evaluations besides learning to point out ways to improve instead of just focusing on the strengths of each speaker.

The second part of the meeting was the assignment speeches.

The first assignment speaker was Jamie, giving her ice breaker speech entitled ‘The Little Girl’. She told a heartwarming story of her past even though at the beginning, she did tell us how she disliked introduction speeches. The topic she chose was definitely close to heart as she told us the story full with emotions.

The second assignment speaker was Boon Keong with his speech, ‘Leaders of a Great Nation’. According to him, we are all leaders of a great nation. We are all leaders of procrastination. He then moved on to give four simple tips to stop procrastinating, which were to list the essentials, create accountability, focus on small steps and set deadlines.

The third assignment speaker, Jook Yew’s speech title was ‘Football’. He started off with a short story of a young boy who wanted to play football and moved on to Malaysia and eventually, reminded us to be grateful of what we are and what we have.

The fourth assignment speaker was Han Lian, speaking about ‘Mind Your Language’. He told the audience many instances on how a simple punctuation can cause such a big difference, sometimes causing it to be misleading or even offensive.

The final part of the meeting was the evaluation session. After all, evaluation is the breakfast for winners. Each evaluator, Claudia, John and Joyce gave their evaluations respectively, thoroughly going through each point of improvements and strengths of each speaker. Next up was the reports from the Language Evaluator (LE), Kang Han, Ah Counter (AC) Denise and Timekeeper (TK) Boon Keong.

Before the business session and closing address, the new Area W2 Governor, Ernest, who happens to be our IPP as well gave an area governor’s address. Ernest was kind enough to introduce to us our roots, starting from club level to area to division and to district. For those of you who didn’t know, we are in Area W2, Division W and District 51. We are encouraged to go clubbing especially to those clubs of same area so that we can create a closer friendship and bond among area clubs.

Lastly, John as the president conducted the business session and gave a closing address. The best table topics speaker was Ernest, best assignment speaker Han Lian and the best evaluator was Joyce. John did acknowledge that there was just too much for him to say, but he did tell us about the upcoming events such as humour contests.

On the 21st, HELP UC Toastmasters Club had another momentous meeting. Not only were there 2 members beginning their toastmasters journey by giving their ice-breaker speeches, one of our current committee members was giving her 10th and final speech from the competent communicators manual. Furthermore, there were quite a number of visitors and a relatively good turnout for this meeting.

Our club was also honoured with the presence of 3 members of the Midvalley Toastmasters Club as well as Ahmad from MIM Toastmasters Club who consented to be an evaluator as well as volunteer himself for the table topics session:

On top of that, we proud to announce we have 2 more members who have begun their Toastmasters journey: Kevin and BK!

As mentioned earlier, we are proud to announce that one of our members, namely Miss Kan Foong Wen was completed her competent communicator manual. Although she lives a great distance away, she has not allowed distance or higher oil prices to decrease her growth as a Toastmaster. Good Job Foong Wen!

However, the speech of the day went to Jook Yew. His title in itself deserved a mention for its unique-ness "the long lost laughter of a not so common ATM machine"

All in all, the meeting was great, HELP UC Toastmasters Club will continue to grow. Until next time everyone!

Good morning everyone! My name is Jook Yew. Today, I'll be giving mysecond speech entitled, the long lost laughter of the not so common ATM machine. I know it does sound long.What does this not so common ATM machine sound like to you all? Does it sound like, A, a very hugesophisticated four legged machine? Or, B, a small convenient I-Podlike machine? (waiting for response from the audience)..All of youranswers are wrong!. Because the correct answer is C! this machine isactually my father. Technically he is an ATM machine because he is thesole supplier of all my necessities n luxury. What makes him not socommon? Simple! He is biologically programmed to love n nurture me!This reason is simply good enough.

What day was 6 days ago? Was it the regular where you wake up, play, eat and sleep? Or was it the Sunday where you do all your dull boring housework? I bet none of these is the answer because 2 days ago was a day where u should at least do something special 2 express your immense filial love towards your father. It was rather a meaningfuland ideal father's day which I would treasure in my Pandora box.

Today, I am about to share a few wonderful chronicles which happenedon this year's father's day with you all with the intention toencourage all of you to love your father deeper than you do right now.Last Sunday was rather simple but extremely meaningful. The spotlight of the day was neither the luxurious present which we bought for my father nor the few lovely kisses which we gave him on his fleshy cheek. It was actually the movie which we watched, Kung Fu Panda. I amas certain as the sun will set from the west that those of you whohave watched this movie already would agree with me that it is 1 ofthe most hilarious , entertaining and relaxing movies! I would like to convince those who have not watched this movie yet go grab a ticket n pamper yourself with a few hours of good laughter. The bottom line is,it is a 2 thumbs up movie.

While me and my family were watching the movie, there I was peepingsecretly on my father who was laughing non stop insanely like a 5 year old innocent kid while he is actually a 50 year old mature stallion.At the instant moment, I could actually feel the intense aura of him as a happy man as though he is an unleashed freeman already. Free from the grief of hiking oil prices, free from the grief of bills n debts about to be settled and free from the worries of his infinite endless tedious job. I personally the movie was a truly a miracle as though laughing bombs with power similar to an atomic bomb just fell off the sky, creating an atmosphere of wilderness! In the case of my father,it was rather therapeutic,purging off n diffusing his "stress poison". It has been so long. So long that I felt it was like 500 billionlight years ago since the last time he was indulging himself so much.The 50 minutes of queing up was definitely worthy in exchange of such enjoyable moment. I'm glad he was jubilant throughout the whole movie,throughout the whole day.

There are 2 great lessons which I have learnt and thought would befantastic if applied in real life. First, appreciate present time.Time is basically classified in 3 categories, past, present and future. The reason why the time right now is called present is because the time right now is like a wrapped up Christmas present filled with surprises and miracles. It all depends on how you unwrap it, enjoy it and appreciate it. That's why it is called Present. People, learn from the past, engage in the present and believe in the future. Last butnot least, the second lesson. LOVE. Love everything beside of you including your enemy who stole your lover or the teacher who cannedyou while u were so young and defenseless. Just like how I love mystrict, fierce, discipline Japanese- like father who consistently challenge me in such an annoying way such as "Hey son. U don't just talk the talk. When are u going to walk the walk and show me you'recapable of…BLA BLA BLA..which goes on forever n ever. People,appreciate n love!!! Thank you.

A marathon meetin'

31^st May signaled the end of yet another month. The marathon meeting started pretty late at approximately 9.55am due to an unforseen circumstance.

The SAA of the day, Jook Yew, quickly took the stage and started the meeting, not forgetting to apologise to the guests for the delay. He proceeded to ask the audience to introduce themselves, and answer the question, 'What have you done to help the victims of Cyclone Nagris and the earthquake in China?'

Next up was the Presidential address, during which Ernest proudly announced to the guests of HELP TMC's achievement in receiving the President's Distinguished Club award for the 4^th consecutive year.

It was then the Toastmaster of the Morning, Qin Mei's turn to take the stage. Perhaps in the spirit of the day of not doing things as usual, she quizzed the audience about the history of Toastmasters instead of telling it. Thank goodness the audience rose to the challenge and passed with flying colours!

First to take the stage was Denise, with her Icebreaker speech titled 'Away from Home'. She talked about her experiences away from home, first during a camp when she was 10 years old, then during her National Service stint when she was 18.

The second speaker, Kang Han, began his second assignment speech, titled 'Comic', with a joke, drawing laughter from the audience. He went on to give practical tips on how to be funny, and more importantly, he reminded the audience to remember to have fun when telling a joke.

The third speaker, Han Lian, also gave his second assignment speech, titled 'Caution'. He talked about being cautious in today's world, not only about how it is needed, but also about how it can bring disastrous results if practised to the extreme.

After that, the SAA called for a 10-minute break, after which was Qin Mei's turn to give her fifth assignment speech, titled 'Thank You'. She talked about her Toastmaster's journey thus far, and thank the people who left footprints in her life. She even gave the audience one souvenir each! (Thank you Qin Mei! :D)

Then it was something special again. TM Jasmine gave a very insightful speech from the Successful Club Series, where she gave tips on how to build the best climate for the club. She emphasised interaction with members and guests, the spirit of volunteering and a supportive environment, among others. Overall it was a very educational and insightful, and we are all grateful that she delivered it to our club.

Next up was the evaluation session. TM Jasmine, also the General Evaluator of the day, conducted the session. The first evaluator was TM John Lee, followed by TM Ernest, TM Satchit and last but not least, TM Gerard. Then the Grammarian, Jee Aik, Ah-counter, Book Keong, and Timekeeper, Kevin all gave their reports. During the evaluation session by Jasmine, she suggested that if another 'incident' like that morning's occur, we could perhaps conduct an impromtu Table Topics session. Good advice, indeed.

Lastly, it was Ernest's turn to give his closing address. He apologised profusely for that morning's delay, before moving on to present the Best Speaker and Best Evaluator awards. The Best Speaker award went to TM Han Lian, while TM John Lee took home the Best Evaluator award.

Also, he presented the Ice-Breaker Award to TM Denise, and a new member kit to TM Jaime. And as a token of appreciation, a small badge was given to TM Jasmine Leong for her support to this club.

Finally, the meeting adjourned at 12.00 noon. What an eventful day indeed! Before I forget, a big THANK YOU to all the guests who came: TM Jasmine, TM Gerard, TM Chia (all the way from Ipoh!), TM Satchit, Carmen, Cassandra (Ernest's sister), Bella, Keng Yik, Hong Yee and Chiraq.

A light and easy 3rd of May

The 124^th day (of 2008).

Saturday – 3^rd May,

The number of audience was pleasing as there were a mix of visitors from other clubs and new and current members. Sergeant-At-Arms, Ming Huar greeted everyone and as a warm up for the session, he requested the crowd to introduce themselves.

After names has been given and memories refreshed, it was time for the Presidential Address. Ernest Wong, our sporting President gave his presidential speech on the happenings at Toastmasters and his planed for the morning.

Keeping to the timetable, Toastmaster of the Morning (TOM) Claudia gave a simply introduction to Toastmaster for those who are new to it. Also, TOM requested the word of the day from the Language Evaluator (LE) Kevin, who is role playing for the first time in his toastmasters journey.

Next up, the most anticipated time of almost every toastmaster meeting there is… and was… the Table Topics Session! Today’s Table Topics Master was none other than our enthusiastic Jason Moi, who with his creative mind came up with weird but interesting “topics”.

Confident Han Lian was the first to volunteer to speak, and randomly chose a piece of paper with a huge Chinese character “人”(People) written on it. Next was Usama, who chose a paper with a black dot “●” in the middle. Usama although unsure, managed to interpret the “dot” as 1 or I. The third speaker was Weng Hong, he chose a paper which has the word “Confused?” written confusingly. Fourth came Ernest, and he got a paper with the “Yin-Yang” symbol drawn on it. Last not least was Qin Mei, who seemed to have gotten the most interesting topic to talk about, she chose a paper that was blank! It was then time for the Table Topics Evaluator, John Lee to give his evaluation for each table topics speaker.

Moving on, TOM Claudia introduced the first speaker Han Lian, who gave his first ever assignment speech from the Competent Communicator Manual with the title “Sweet Surprises”. The second speaker, Jason Moi gave his mind moving fourth Competent Communicator Manual speech entitled “The Hidden Evil in Music”. After Jason’s speech, it was time for a short break for everyone to refresh themselves and socialize.

When the 10 minutes intermission ended, it was time for our third speaker of the day, Claudia. Claudia gave her ninth Competent Communicator Manual speech with the title “I Care”, which was touching and very relevant especially for the upcoming TMC Elections.

Control was then handed over to the General Evaluator, Ernest who then requested for the individual reports from the evaluators, namely, Ming Haur (for Han Lian), John Lee (for Jason) and Ernest (for Claudia). Following that would be the Language Evaluator’s report, the AH Counter’s report (role played by Jee Aik), the Time Keeper’s (role played by first timer Denise) and lastly the General Evaluator’s.

After all the reports have been given and clarified, it was time for the closing speech or should I say the President’s closing address. This time, Ernest had a rather long but important and useful speech. First the presented the award for the Best Table Topic Speaker and the Best Assignment Speech Speaker of the day. Afterwards, he gave the important bit which was the explanation of the Executive Committee Post and their respective responsibilities, all of which are with relevance with the upcoming TMC Elections held on the 17^th of May. And that concluded the session, everyone continued with their socializing and later bid farewell to one another.

An exhilirating 26th!

Saturday - 26^th April, yet another great day to have an exhilarating Toastmasters Meeting at HELP University College. The meeting commenced about 15 minutes off schedule due to unfortunate events, whereby a role player had trouble reaching on time. Nevertheless, the meeting went on as usual, and as the saying goes, “It’s better late than Never!”

There was quite a fair attendance for today’s meeting. Most present were regular members, toastmasters from other clubs, as well as some new faces. The crowd was asked to introduce themselves to the rest by the temporary Sergeant-At-Arms, a good start to get to know each other a little better.

Moving on, first-timer Toastmaster of the Morning (TOM), Qin Mei warmed up the audience with a brief history of Toastmasters and requested the word of the day from the Language Evaluator, Gajendran.

Now for the exciting bit, the Table Topics Session! Jook Yew, another first-time role player for the Table Topics Master did a great job, especially with the topics.

Boon Keong kicked start the session as the first speaker with a randomly chosen one word topic “Patriotism”. . The next speaker, Hong Shen, was brave to volunteer as he is new and it is his first time ever to give a speech in a toastmasters meeting. His topic was entitled “If your life is a long holiday, would leisure be tedious than work?”. The third speaker was Sue Jean, having chosen a one word topic “Discipline”. Following that was Sutha as the forth speaker, with another one word speech entitled “Pollution”.Suresh was next to confidently volunteer, and randomly chose topic titled “Are men equal?” Last but not least, Gajendran our sixth speaker gave a speech about “Love”.

When the table topics session was all over, the cheerful and enthusiastic Jason Moi gave a clear and simple evaluation for the speakers.

Later, TOM Qin Mei continued by introducing the first assignment speaker, Jook Yew who gave his first Competent Communicator Manual speech titled “It’s up To You”. The next speaker was Jason Moi with his third Competent Communicator Manual speech entitled “The Role of Money”.

Jason’s speech ended with a 10 minutes break for refreshments and more socializing. After the intermission, Sergeant-At-Arms, Boon Keong called the meeting to order and the TOM introduced the third assignment speaker Jasmine. Jasmine’s second Advanced Communication Manual speech was a ‘Speaking to Inform’ assignment, and the title was “To Sleep or To Breath”. Last but not least, our President Ernest gave his second assignment speech from the Advanced Communication Manual. He was “Presenting an Award”, a real one in fact, to our Vice President of Education, John Lee for his recent achievement in a competition. Ernest presented like a pro with minor unnoticeable flaws.

After that, the Evaluators of the speakers came out to present their respective evaluation. Then, the Language Evaluator (Gajendran), AH Counter (Jee Aik), Time Keeper (Pui Yee) and General Evaluator (John Lee) presented their respective reports on the meeting.

Before the meeting ended, the Area Governor, Mustafa presented the President Distinguish Award to our club President in his Area Governor’s Address. A great achievement it was! To wrap things up, Ernest gave his Closing Speech with gratitude and words of encouragement for everyone to further contribute to the success of our club. With that, today’s meeting came to an end.

Nothing like a good ol' Meeting

Ahh... nothing like another Saturday morning Toastmaster’s meeting to start your day….As first time Sergeant-at-Arms, Michael Chow called for the meeting to begin and posed the question, “What have you done to counter the effects of global warming?” as a Toastmaster’s “warming-up” session to wake up those who were still half-asleep, and also to give the audience a chance to introduce themselves.

The meeting then proceeded with John Lee, Vice President of Education giving the Presidential Address of the morning in place of the Ernest Wong, who unfortunately could not attend the meeting because he was attending another Toastmaster’s Convention.

Next, the floor was handed over to Tan Jee Aik, the Table Topics Master to initiate the Table Topics Session of the morning. He carried out the session by showing the participants a list of topics and asked them to select their own favoured topic.

His request for the first volunteer was quickly met by Han Lian who rapidly responded and chose the topic “What You Do is What You Get”. He caught everyone’s attention by relating his topic to the famous idiom, “What you reap is what you sow”. The next table topics speaker was Michael Chow who chose the topic “There is No Absolute Truth”. He challenged the audience’s trust in so-called “truths” by relating the example of Newton’s Laws of Physics which were disproved by Albert Einstein. This was followed by Jasmine Leong who chose the topic “People Cannot be Trusted”. She too posed an interesting notion that we cannot absolutely believe historical records as it could also be faked by the people of that time. Lastly, Boon Keong, the final table topics participant, selected the topic “Technology has Shaped the World into a Better Place” and discussed the importance of technology to all of us. After this, the floor was handed to Jason Moi to evaluate the table Topics.

After the Table Topics Session, the Toastmaster of the Morning, John Lee continued the meeting by introducing the first assignment speaker, Qin Mei who presented her fourth Competent Communicator Manual speech entitled, “Word or Actions?” She started off her speech by first asking the audience whether they agreed with the idiomatic expression, “Actions Speak Louder than Words”, and naturally, the audience agreed. But she then asked the audience whether they agreed with the phrase, “The Pen is Sharper than the Sword”, causing the audience to ponder about whether to agree with this second statement, thus effectively grabbing the audience’s attention. Qin Mei then discussed the importance of using actions and words in the right situation at the right time.

The next assignment speaker, Claudia Ting presented her eighth Competent Communicator Manual speech entitled “Fashion Updates” while using a laptop as means of visual aid. She assumed herself to be a “Style TV Network” television presenter and informed the audience regarding the latest fashion lines by various famous fashion designers. Everyone was impressed by her extensive research and knowledge pertaining to current fashion trends.

After Claudia’s speech, there was a fifteen minute break for refreshments and fellowship. This was followed by the third assignment speech by John Lee who presented his second Advanced Communication Manual Speech entitled “Lazy Lazarus”. He first gave an introduction to his presentation by informing the audience about the life of the author of the poem, Sylvia Plath, who was a brilliant but mentally disturbed woman. He told as that she had already attempted suicide several times, and that the poem he was about to read was her very last work before she succeeded in doing so.

After that, the assigned speech evaluators came out to give their respective evaluations. Claudia Ting evaluated Qin Mei’s speech, while John Lee evaluated Claudia’s speech, and Jasmine Leong evaluated John Lee’s speech. This was followed by the General Evaluator’s report which was done by Claudia Ting. John Lee then wrapped up the entire meeting by presenting the Best Table Topics, Best Assignment Speech and Best Evaluator Awards to the respective winners, followed by a closing speech.
